S S VALPARAISO 1893. This water damaged cover endorsed ‘Per Valparaiso’ and ‘via Lisboa’ originated in Brazil and was carried on the German steamer Valparaiso when it was involved in an incident that caused the mail to be damaged. The cover arrived in London and has MY 24 93 cancels on both the front and back. A violet two line DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER cachet is on the front. This is the earliest recorded usage of this boxed cachet which subsequently became widely used on mail in ship incidents. To date this is the only recorded cover from this incident. A rare item.
