  • £675.00

1849 HIBERNIA. The Cunard Line ‘Hibernia’ arrived from Liverpool in Boston on 29 August 1849 and sailed for Halifax on 1 September. She ran aground at Chebucto Head, 15 miles south of Halifax. It managed to refloat and arrived 6 days later in Halifax, but in a leaking condition. The passengers and mail were transferred to another Cunard ship, the ‘Canada’. This outer wrapper, endorsed 'Hibernia' was posted in New York on August 27th and arrived in London 18 September. This outer wrapper appears to be the only known surviving item from this incident and is the basis for the write up in Hoggarth & Gwynn’s book Maritime Disaster Mail.
