S. S. AVA. 1858 cover to Andover, England, that was on the S. S. AVA that sailed from Calcutta on 10 February 1858 and Maras on February 15th. It ran aground on rocks near Pigeon Island, 80 miles from Trincomalee, Ceylon. Mail was recovered by divers, this cover being on the second batch recovered that was conveyed on the S S Colombo, arriving in London on May 10th. The stamps have been washed of and on arrival a LONDON PAID MY 11 58 datestamp applied. The back has the cachet ‘Saved from the wreck /of the Ava’.
