1942 S S EMPIRE KINGFISHER. On January 18 1942 the S S Empire Kingfisher, a 6082 ton Ministry of War Transport ship is believed to have struck a submerged object at 3 p.m. off Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. She sank on the morning of the 19th January. This cover from Philadelphia (JAN 12) to England, censored and redirected on arrival, has a straight line ‘SALVAGED FROM SEA’ h/s and a label stating ‘POSTAL CENSORSHIP / The British Censorship is / not responsible for the absence of / Stamps from the cover of this / Postal Packet’ A London 11 MAR 1942 arrival cancel is on the back, so the letter must have been held for a considerable time after being recovered. This is the first time I have seen a label like this attached to any shipwreck cover. An interesting and rare item.
