1862 COLOMBO, EX NEW ZEALAND. 1862 cover to Dalkeith from DUNEDIN (OC 10 62) that was on the P&O steamer COLOMBO that was wrecked off the Minicoy Islands in the Laccadives in the Indian Ocea on 29th November. Recovered mail was forwarded on the Nemesis arriving in England on December 31st. Mail received a cachet ‘SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF / THE COLOMBO’ (Hoggarth & Gwynn Type 1) applied in London on arrival. Accompanying the cover is the original letter which refers to sheep prices, shepherds wages and complains that diggers (gold miners) were eating up all the ‘wethers’ (young sheep). A fine example of this cachet.
