“EROS” 1940. The steamship ‘Eros’ sailed from Montreal, Canada, on 30th May 1940. On the 7th June she was torpedoed by a German submarine, U-48, off the north west coast of Ireland. The ‘Eros’ was beached and the mail that was in the hold was washed ashore and salvaged. ‘SALVED FROM THE SEA’ or ‘Recovered from the sea’ cachets were applied to recovered mail. This cover from Quebec, Canada, has a good strike of the very scarce Recovered from the Sea cachet that was applied in Dublin. These Irish cachets are very much scarcer than the ones applied in England.
