GERMANIA 1869. The steamer S S Germania of the Hamburg-America Line departed New York on August 3 for Hamburg via Plymouth and Cherbourg with 270 passengers and a crew of 120. On the morning of August 7th she encountered dense fog and at about 5.30 a.m. ran onto a reef in Freshwater Cove, Trepassey Bay, Newfoundland. The passengers and crew took to the lifeboats and just after 6.00 a.m. the ship went over on her starboard side and sank into 54 foot of water. The recovered mail was processed in Hamburg and a label applied which translates as ‘Recovered from the sunken mail steamer Germania. This cover from St Louis (30 JY) to Germany has the label, as all existing covers have, affixed to the back of the cover. A Hamburg 24 August arrival cancel is on the front of the cover. A rare cover with only about 10 recorded.
