PRINCESS ASTRID. The Princess Astrid a Belgium Government owned cross Channel steamer between Ostend and Dover struck a mine 3 miles off the coast at Dunkirk on 21st June. It was thought he mine had been buried in sand and recently washed free. Five crew were killed in the explosion. The captain of the Princess Astrid managed to beach the ship on a sandbank and the passengers and crew were rescued. Some mail was recovered, all emanating from Germany. Three different labels are known, only one in English, the other two in German, suggesting the mail was returned to Germany. This cover with the English label still has the original contents. A rare shipwreck with less than 10 covers recorded in total, of which only four are known with this English label.
