S S SHIRALA 1918. A parcel post receipt with a C.O.D. label from Finsbury, London (25 JU 18) to Egypt, that was on the S S SHIRALA, a 5306 ton steamer owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd. that was torpedoed by the German submarine U-57 at 5.12 p.m. off the Isle of Wight, killing 8 crew members. Only two badly damaged covers and three (including this) parcel dispatch items ae recorded. The PARCEL LOST AT SEA cachet is the only recorded use of this cachet. Rare.
