S. S. SUSSEX. 1916 cover to India that was on the S.S. Sussex that was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-29 while crossing the English Channel between Folkstone and Dieppe on 24th March 1916. The vessel; was towed into Boulogne with about 60 feet of the front of the ship blown away. There were a number of casualties, but the figure is not known. The cachet applied to this cover is a boxed violet two line ‘DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN WATER’. A scarce wreck cover.
