SCHOMBERG 1855. When the 2284 ton S V Schomberg of the Black Ball Line was launched in April 1855, she was the largest ship at the time to have been built in Britain. Her maiden voyage to Australia left Liverpool on 6 October 1855. About 100 miles from Melbourne she ran aground on an uncharted sand spit 35 miles west of Cape Otway, Victoria, on 27th December and broke up, becoming a total loss. All passengers were saved, as was the mail. This letter, that has had the stamp washed off, was posted in Exeter on OC 2 and has been endorsed ‘Per Clipper Ship Schomberg from Liverpool Oct 5 1855’. Sydney and Bathurst JA 2 1856 transit and arrival cancels are on the back of the letter. A very scarce shipwreck with less than 10 items recorded.
