VASU 1956 NEAR TONGA. On 14th June 1956, the wooden motor vessel ‘Vasu’ was abandoned in heavy weather and sank about 200 miles north of Tonga while en route to Samoa. All 18 crew were rescued. Only a small amount of mail was on board and recovered mail received a violet straight line h/s SOILED MAIL EX “VASU”. This cover, posted in Melbourne 1 JUN 1956 was destined for Apia, Samoa.
