S S NORTH AMERICAN AT ANTICOSTI ISLAND, CANADA. 1867 cover to Kelso, Scotland, endorsed ‘Per Canadian Packet’ with a 12½c tied by a MONTREAL JU 14 67 barred duplex canceller. The cover was put on board the Allan Line steamer North American at Quebec on 15th June. The following day she ran aground on Anticosti Island in the St Lawrence and was damaged. The mails were recovered and taken to Newfoundland by the St George. They were then picked up by the Allan Line steamer ‘Austrian’ and they arrived in Liverpool on July 9th. The cover then eventually got to Glasgow on JY 10 and Kelso later the same day. The North American was refloated and towed to Quebec for repairs and only resumed sailing in November that year. An unrecorded shipwreck. Fine and appealing.
