1937 cover to a passenger on board the S.S. Winchester Castle in Madera with a G.B. 1½d coil stamp cancelled Worthing 4 FEB 1937. On arrival in Madera it was found the ship had sailed and a violet boxed cachet applied explaining that. It was forwarded to South Africa and Postage Dues applied on the back cancelled FUNCHAL 10 FE 37. On arrival in South Africa the cover went to the Winchester Castle but the passenger had disembarked and a boxed ‘Unclaimed On Board’ h/s applied. It was forwarded to an address in Kenilworth and a ‘2d’ tax mark, along with a 2d Postage Due, cancelled 9 MAR 37, applied. An interesting cover with both Portuguese and South African Postage Dues.
