1837 folded letter written on board the “Boadicea” at Latitude 19.26 south, Longitude 1.50 East and with a manuscript ‘G Whitcombe, St Helena, date 30th June and 5 July, Recvd. November 15 1837. Addressed to Launceston, Island of Van Diemen’s Land, dated 30th June 1837. The letter went into the post at Cape Town where a General Post Office Cape Town SE 25 1837 datestamp was applied. A Ship Letter NO 14 1837 ‘arrival’ cancel is on the back and a ‘Received 15 November 1837’ manuscript note. On 2nd October 1835 the ‘Boadicea was chartered to take 260 female immigrants to Van Diemen’s Land, arriving 2nd February 1836. The writer was obviously in contact with someone he had met when there a few months earlier and was probably writing this letter on his return journey to England from Van Diemen’s Land.. Two light vertical filing folds do not detract from this extremely rare letter from St Helena to a very rare destination.
