1796 folded letter to Scotland, written by Major Macbean to his wife, and headed St Lucia May 30 96. A curved PORTSMOUTH SHIP LETTER h/s is on the front of the letter which has a great historical content. A JY 5 96 arrival cancel is on the back. He tells of the recapturing of the Island (for the third time) after several weeks of fighting in which Castries was burnt. The French Governor and the garrison of over 2000 men surrendered to the British on May 26th, four days before this letter was written. A very fine and rare item of great historical importance.
