SUAKIN EXPEDITION IN THE MAHDIST WAR. 1896 Soldiers’ and Seamen’s One Anna postal stationery envelope to Bombay cancelled BASE POST OFFICE ‘B’ 2 JU 96. The cover has been endorsed at the foot by the sender Chatar Singh Head Office, and Indian Field Force. At the left is a signature and Post Master Field Post Office. Transit and arrival cancels are on the back. This was part of the Mahdist War and reconquest of the Sudan in 1896-1898. Indian troops were sent to Suakin to garrison the town and forts, relieving other troops for active participation. An interesting cover.
