DARFUR REVOLT. 1916 censored 5m postal stationery envelope to London , written by Major H J Huddleston who has signed at the lower left corner, cancelled NAHUD 16 JAN 16. A PASSED BY CENSOR ‘6’ cachet is on the front of the cover. Various Sudan transit backstamps. In 1915 Ali Dinar, the Sultan of Darfur, a province in western Sudan, renounced allegiance to the Sudan Government in favour of Turkey and made arrangements to invade Kordofan Province in the east. A British force was assembled at Nahud in December 1915 and crossed into Darfur in March 1916, reaching Jebel el Hella and then went on to the capital, El Fasher, which was occupied on 23 May. This cover was written and sent during the preparation for the invasion. The cover has been strengthened on the inside. An uncommon item from this campaign.
