1861 folded letter to Launceston with a 4d, numeral watermark, four large margins, tied by a barred ‘52’ cancel of LAUNCESTON. The letter was written in Melbourne and has a triple oval Downie & Murphy, Melbourne, agents h/s. It would then have been handed over to a to the Havilah ship’s captain who then posted it on arrival in Tasmania, saving the sender 2d as the intercolonial rate was 6d whereas the inland rate was 4d. A Ship Letter Postage Free 23 MAY 1861 datestamp is on the back. A very fine item, finding a 4d with such large margins on a cover is very uncommon.
