On April 7 1886 passenger train No. 35 on the Hoosac Tunnel Line fell over the embankment between Bardwell’s ferry and West Deerfield Station and plunged 200 feet down into the Deerfield River, with many killed or injured. The post car was washed down river carrying the mail with it. This cover with a BOSTON & TROY R.P.O. APR 7 cancel has the stamp washed off and a violet two line ‘IN FITCHBURG R. R. DISASTER, APL 7 1886’ applied. According to the book ‘Railway Disaster Mail’ by Hoggarth and Gwynn, only four covers have been recorded from this accident.
