1897 GARRISON NY. On October 24th, the Buffalo to New York ‘State Express’ Train No. 46 of the New York, Weehawken & Hudson River Railroad, fell into the Hudson River south of Garrison, 50 miles north of New York, after a retaining wall collapsed. The train comprised of an engine and nine railway cars, most of which fell into the river, killing twenty passengers. Among those who survived was ‘Gentleman Jim’ Corbett, the previous world heavyweight boxing champion, who was pulled from the river. Salvaged mail received an explanatory label headed Post Office New York and dated 25th October. A fine example of this scarce train incident.
