1912 WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT. On October 3 1912, the Boston, Springfield and New York R.P.O. Train 53 jumped the track at Westport. The petrol tank and boiler exploded setting fire to the carriages and killing seven passengers, including the engineer and mail clerk, and injuring 40 others. Investigators put the cause of the incident to excessive speed with the driver trying to make up lost time. This cover from Hartford to St Louis has both fire and water damage.
