1954 HANAU, GERMANY. On August 24 1954 a passenger train D276 crashed into the Rome – Copenhagen Express F211 killing two passengers and injuring 17 others. Five coaches of the express were derailed, the engine toppled over an embankment and a sleeper coach was flung on top of the dining car. There was little damage to the German train. A two line cachet was applied to damaged mail. This charred post card from Barcelona, Spain, has a violet 2 line explanatory cachet. ‘Durch Zugungluck bei Hanau beschadigt’. Uncommon, this two line cachet not mentioned or illustrated in Hoggarth & Gwynn.
