LAKE CHAMPLAIN, U.S.A. Train No. 4 of the Delaware & Hudson Railway left Montreal, Canada, for New York, at 9.10 a.m. on 3 December 1894. It was running 40 minutes late and the driver took a sharp curve too fast and around 1 p.m. crashed into Lake Champlain, the mail, emigrant and smoking cars going into the water killing 2 passengers. A three line cachet was applied to damaged mail. ‘Damage caused by wreck / of mail train on Lake / Champlain New York’.
