MANAWATU RIVER, NEW ZEALAND. In the early morning of 20th August 1946 goods train No. 902 left Palmerston North for Napier. While crossing the Manawatu Gorge the locomotive and the first three wagons were derailed, fell 60 feet into the flooded river below (including the post car) killing the driver and fireman. Salvage took some days because of difficulty working in the Gorge. The recovered mail was sent to Wellington for processing and a three line cachet applied. A fine example from this train wreck.
