1952 cover from New York (Feb 25) to Redding, CA. that has a three line violet cachet ‘ DAMAGED BY FIRE / IN UN PAC TR 5 / FEB 28 1952’. A petrol tanker loaded with 6800 gallons of gasoline skidded on ice, crashed through a guard rail and exploded on the railway line near Morgan, Utah. A short time after the crash a Union Pacific express mail train emerged from a tunnel and ran into the blazing wreckage. Nine mail cars were gutted. Although there was a reasonable quantity of salvaged mail, this is a scarce and rarely seen cover from this incident.
