KEBOEMEN, JAVA, DUTH EAST INDIES. Around 12.15 p.m. on 26th October 1919 a fire was noticed on the Bandoeng – Soerabaja express train near Keboemen. The train was stopped before the station. The mail carriage was on fire and was put into a siding, but owing to the primitive fire fighting equipment available, took and hour and a half to extinguish, by which time virtually all the mail was destroyed. This cover – the only known surviving item – has a
three line label attached, written in Dutch. Translated it says ‘DELIVER POST FREE / DAMAGED AND DELAYED THROUGH FIRE / RAILWAY POST WAGON ON 26-10-1919. A very rare cover and the only known train incident from Java.
