FRESNO, CALIFORNIA. On the 4th or 5th January 1954, an incident occurred on either an Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway train or a Southern Pacific Railroad train. Very few covers are known to establish what exactly happened, but as this envelope is a Post Office ‘Penalty’ envelope, then the cover that would have been enclosed must have been badly damaged, probably burned. The cachet reads ‘Damaged By R. R. / Casualty / Fresno, Calif.’ This cachet is the only one recorded that uses the word ‘Casualty’ An uncommon item.
