2nd SEKUKUNI WAR. 1879 (Dec 28th) stampless cover to London from Capt. S. H. McLeod Nairn, 94th Regiment, Commg. Troops, Fort Albert, Sekukuni Territory, endorsed ‘On Service in the Field – No Stamps obtainable’ that was taxed 6d on arrival in London. A Cape Town JAN 19 80 transit and Southhall 8 FEB 80 arrival cancels are on the back. Although the British had first condemned the Transvaal war against Sekhukhune in 1876, it was continued after the annexation of the Transvaal. In 1878 and 1879 three British attacks were successfully repelled until they defeated Sekhukhune in November 1879 with an army of 2,000 British soldiers, Boers and 8000 Swazis, a force raised by Captain Norman MacLeod, formerly of the 74th Highlanders and Special Commissioner and British Agent for Swaziland. At about 2 a.m. on the morning of 28th November, the attack on the Sekukuni began. By 1 p.m. they were victorious with many Sekukuni / Bapedi dead. Sekhukhune was captured and on 9 December 1879 he was imprisoned in Pretoria. A very rare cover from this War.
