1897 ½d postal card with a ½d added to Bloemfontein cancelled PIET POTGIETERSRUST 6 JUL 97. Pretoria 7 JUL and Bloemfontein JY 8 97 transit and arrival datestamps are on the front of the card. Originally called Vredenburg, the town was renamed Piet Potgietersrust, in honour of Piet Potgieter, who had been fatally wounded in the Makapan Cave attack that took place four years prior. He was the eldest son of the Voortrekker leader Andries Potgieter. The town name was later shortened to Potgietersrus. An uncommon cancellation.
