1898 1d postal card to Holland cancelled by a fine strike of the very uncommon SMITSDORP 4 FEB 98 datestamp. Pretoria 6 FEB and Amsterdam 26 FEB 98 transit and arrival cancels are on the card. Smitsdorp, in the Eastern Transvaal, was established by gold diggers on 21 November 1887 and named Smitsdorp, after General Nicolas Smit. As gold deposits in the area turned out to be very small, the gold rush soon petered out, especially after large deposits of gold were found on the Witwatersrand. A fine cancel from this small village.
