1857 ‘diggers’ cover, with the original letter, to Concord, NH, USA, endorsed ‘Via London per ship Sydenham’ with a 6d dull orange , large to enormous margins, tied by a barred ‘1’ numeral canceller of MELBOURNE, with a dispatch JA 31 1857 datestamp on the back. The private clipper Sydenham left Melbourne on 6th February and sailed via Cape Horn to Gravesend, arriving June 3rd. It then went on the Fulton that sailed from Southampton on June 3rd arriving in New York on 16th June, with a postmark of 17 June tying the stamp. The diggers letter informs his wife that he has sold their gold.
