1884 underpaid mourning cover to Tunbridge Wells, England, endorsed ‘Via Brindisi’ with a 4a tied by a duplex ZANZIBAR AU 4 and ‘B’ in barred circle. The cover has a circular ‘T’ tax mark and a m/s ‘6cts’ as mail via Brindisi was 5a per ½oz. Sea Post Office ‘F’ 12 AUG, Aden 16 AUG and Tunbridge Wells AU 31 84 transit and arrival cancels are on the back. Addressed to Admiral Hay, Sir James Dalrymple-Hay entered the Royal Navy in 1834 and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1866 after a distinguished career. He retired as an Admiral in 1878. A very fine and rare cover, this cancel was only used for 2 years between 1882 and 1884. Also one of the earliest mourning covers known from Zanzibar.
