1879 soldiers 1d rate cover to England with a Transvaal 1d tied by an '11' in concentric circles cancellation of UTRECHT. The cover has been endorsed at the top “From 458 Pte J. W. Beardsell, 1 13th Light Infantry”, and has been signed by the Commanding Officer to enable the soldier to get the 1d concession rate. On the back are UTRECHT FE 13 79, Manchester 21 MR and Ashton-Under-Lyne MR 22 transit and arrival cancels. The 1st Battalion of the 13th Light Infantry had defeated the Zulus at Zunguin Nek on January 24 and then fell back on Khambula, near Utrecht where they remained in camp for 2 months. There is some outer edge wear to the cover but still a very scarce cover from this Northern Force in the Zulu War.
